Could Water Pollution Be Creating Dead Zones’ in Our Oceans and Lakes?

When water pollution triggers an algal bloom in a lake or marine ecosystem, the increased nutrients fuel the growth of plants and algae, leading to a drop in oxygen levels within the water. This oxygen depletion, referred to as eutrophication, can result in the suffocation of aquatic plants and animals, ultimately giving rise to ‘dead zones’ where life struggles to thrive. In some instances, these detrimental algal blooms can even generate neurotoxins, impacting a range of marine life, from whales to sea turtles.
