How Does Polyester Affect Marine Life and Ecosystems?

Microfibers and various microplastics originating from polyester have been found in sediment samples. Planktonic crustaceans like Daphnia magna experienced elevated mortality rates upon ingesting these synthetic fibers. Notably, these fibers were also found to be genotoxic, affecting both swimming abilities and reproductive behavior. This is a matter of concern since organisms at lower trophic levels play a pivotal role in our ecosystems’ food chains.
